Did this once, and only once. My appologies to the group. Asked if they would skip the cut sceen (a rather lenghty one) as I had to leave in five minutes. (The rest of the mission after the cut scene can be done in a minute or two) Someone (maybe one of you?) refused to skip. I went AFK to do what I had to do. Came back an hour later and had the mission completed.

I respect it if people have real life things to do, but it's the people who are like "omg skip plzkthx" who are my problem.

New players definately have every right to watch the scenes. It will be their first time experiencing the "story" and they'll naturally want to know what's going on.

The only time I think it "has" to be skipped is if there's a MM in the group. Otherwise, if you want to watch it...watch it. Nobody'll know it was you because it doesn't say who skipped and who didn't skip. Just say "Wasn't me..." when they say "OMG WHICH N00B DIDNT SKIP!!"...

Again I have to say that anyone that wants to watch the cut scenes should state that before joining a group. they probably will miss out on a lot of groups but then again you don't have to deal with the griping and abuse. you can't have it both ways. I'm sorry life sucks like that but it is true. You can either get picked up in groups and miss the scenes most of the time or you can wait for a group that will accomodate your need to follow the story. Either way if you want to watch the cutscenes you better say something otherwise don't complain when everyone else jumps down your throat about not skipping.

EDIT: Also as for their "right", and I put it in quotes because it's not a right, to watch the cutscenes. If you want to bring that into it then you also have to respect the reciprocal of that. That being other people's right to not have to sit through them again. Experienced players have just as much of a right to not have to sit through the same boring thing. All of this could be solved by a little forethought and common courtesy while forming the group.

Yeah, I agree with that. If people want to skip...or not skip, it should be made clear BEFORE entering the mission. If nothing is said beforehand, then anything goes...

Another way to solve it would be to just remove the scenes altogether (and add a "view cinimatics" option on the main menu)...then the "noobs" will be able to watch to their hearts' content, and the "experienced players" will be able to save that precious 30 seconds of their time.

That or just remove the skip button...

I never get tired of watching red engine die!

Hope that wasn't a spoiler for anyone new, the games been out for a year.

I like the idea of it being optional to watch or skip the cut scenes individually.

I think more people would re-watch the cut scenes if they were realistic and beautifully rendered like in the pre-game cinematics I watched before the launch of chapter 1 last year. The cut scenes are not very convincing when the characters mouths don't even move when they talk.

Ediit:Spoiler removed

edit: you forgot the spoiler below mine.

Rurik dies???

I like cutscenes, they give me some break time to look at something else other than the computer screen and do a few pushups or something.

Until there's no sollution to this prob that suites all: if you want to see a cutscene, just watch it, don't let your fun be taken away by spoiled individuals who can't wait for a couple of minutes. Man people can be selfish. Make no illusions about it, I always skip, but have no prob if people want to see them. I enjoyed all the scenes the first time when I saw them almost a year ago, so why would I take that pleasure away from other players.

Ofcourse I agree with the exception that when you're in a running group, all want to get over with it fast.

I agree. If you care strongly one way or another about the group as a whole, speak up. Generally I find though that the onus is on those who want to skip all of the scenes, as one person can stop the ability to skip scenes, whereas one person cannot force you to skip a scene. If you really want a group that skips, why not advertise as much beforehand?

I love the suggestion "Take henchmen"

Yes, all new players can do missions with henchmen. Alesia ftw.

I completely agree. There should be a 'View Cutscene' button. That way, even if you are pressured to skip them. You can still see them.

Just like every other point made here, there is the counter-point. Experience players that wish to skip the scense can also take henchmen. In fact theoretically they should be better at it then the new person that just joined the game.

Is anyone else thinking "Kobayashi Maru" with this topic?

There is no ultimate solution for 'x' in this equation.

For KvanCetre: Yeah, I kinda thought you meant it.. even if you didn't, a few others here do I am sure. I think when people want to get sarcasm across they use "/sarcasm", just to be sure it is getting across.

It appears that my sarcasm was not potent enough. My apologies

Anet left out who is not skipping (just x/x) to shiled them from people who want to "force skip" for a reason. That way no one knows who is not skipping.

As to let other "out" of the cutscene who want to skip, there will be the issue of X is "just" standing there and he must be watching the cutscene or worse out of anger, draw monster's on to them for not skipping.

The game is designed so that if 1 person wants to watch, that is their right. This is how ANet designed the game (which I agree with). So if you want to skip all the scenes, then it is your responsibility to make sure that the group all will skip, before starting the mission.

However I do think that you should not be able to die in the middle of a scene though, thats just retarded... But makes for some entertaining scenes though.

I agree, almost any group with the proper communication would be willing to skip cutscenes, regardless of first time or veteran players... it is the lack of communication (and the occasional jerkwads) that results in long boring cutscenes, death of minions, or what I come to know it as:
Cutscene Catastrophe!

This makes me think of my first time through the Ice Caves of Sorrow mission. We were approaching the movie scene and as normal someone says to skip the movie. Movie comes up and 7/8 skip, except for me, (I love the movies). Then in the background a Mursaat partrol comes along and starts attacking. In the movie you can see members of the party on fire and taking damage, and I'm sitting there going, c'mon finish already, we'll survive. Movie ends and a couple of people are dead and the rest lowish on health. We still managed to finish the mission, but it hasn't made me want to skip movies if I want to watch one. I just chuckle at the memory of the party standing around while getting attacked.

Hmm point of this post? I think the current system is fine. It makes for some funny moments at times, and it's a shame to for new players to skip out on the story. Its only a minute or too, and considering the missions normally take and hour or so its not going to or shouldn't make much difference.

that is wrong.

the person who bought the game has the *right* to play the whole game including a few extra minutes of cutscenes.

it is only for a mission and not the full game with them.

there is no *reciprocal right* of someone who is impatient to spoil the fun of a person who wants to see what will happen in spite of screams of ive seen this before skip.

IS IT NOT FUNNY THAT ALL THE PEOPLE YELLING *SKIP* ARE ONES WHO HAVE ALREADY SEEN IT?

I`VE GOT MINE SO EVERYBODY ELSE SKIP BECAUSE I AM IN A HURRY

WELL BLEEP YOU

So here's the deal. The skip/no skip is anonymous, so there is no pressure. You are not required to skip cutscenes, nor should you be. The ONLY times when you absolutely should skip is when (A) you want to (B) you agreed to, or (C) your in a run.

People who complain about those who dont skip are ignorant. They knew there was a chance that someone wouldnt, they know they can't force someone to skip. Heres the deal, if you ABSOLUTELY NEED cutscenes skipped, play with your guildies or Henchies. Cutscenes are part of the game, and you have no right to force someone to miss part of the game they paid for because your so impatient a 30 second cutscene causes you physical pain.

If you are in a run, skip. If you previously agreed to skip, skip. Dont skip because everyone else wants to, dont skip because they will whine afterwards. If they ask who didnt skip, just say you did, not like they can prove u wrong.

Honestly though, I have the solution to the problem. When the cutscene comes up, have it require 75% of the votes to skip. But add in a feature that lets people watch the cutscenes outside of the mission! Just have a little flag in the programming, when PlayerX reaches this cutscene, make it available for viewing outside of the mission. There we go, problem solved.
